Nel & Malan still dominate target archery nationals

10TH Annual Namibian National Archery Championships

Recurve and compound archers descended on Windhoek this past weekend to participate in the 10th Namibian National Target Archery Championships and were crowned on Sunday afternoon.

Ilana Malan dominated Babette Taljaard in eliminations and Louw Nel continued his reign as 1st ranked on Sunday after an exciting elimination shoot against Luan Groenewald.

Nel and Malan are currently preparing for the World Games in Wroclaw, Poland where they will represent Namibia and compete against the best archers in the world.

The Championship started on Saturday morning with a full 1440 round in relatively calm conditions but ended with winds of up to 23km per hour on Saturday afternoon.

Many archers new to the target archery circuit battled it out on distances ranging from 90 meters to 20 meters.

Sunday morning started perfectly with absolutely no wind. A total of 29 archers competed in the 720 round shooting distances from 30 to 60 meters to win their divisions and become 2017 Namibian Target Archery Champions.

A great atmosphere prevailed during the whole shoot, but an uncanny amount of bow breakages plagued the archers’ success in both the compound and recurve divisions.

The Archery Association of Namibia also had their annual congress meeting on the 25th May at Heja Lodge. AAN is one of the smaller federations registered at the Namibian Sports Commission, but the current council members are all dedicated to promote the sport locally and internationally.
